70's Cult Film Project:: I'm a Midnight Warrior!

Over at one of my favorite blogs, From Midnight, With Love, The Mike is compiling a list of the Most Essential 70's Cult Films and has asked all who may be interested (labeled Midnight Warriors!) to either send him their lists or post a list of their own on their blogs.
Well I've chosen the latter.

I'm pretty straight-forward in my choices, typically leaning waaay towards horror and though I thought of over fifteen that I felt were worthy enough, I whittled the list down to five (not an easy task) and they are as follows:

(And I really didn't feel the need to elaborate, as all of these movies are well known -or at least should be if you are reading a horror blog...)

So if you want to become a Midnight Warrior and join in the FMWL's '70s Cult Project, go here for details.

  1. Nice to see The Wicker Man getting some recognition, as it rightfully deserves! Classic film. Good list - and yet another time I've seen Eraserhead mentioned. I must get around to watching it

  2. I respect people who enjoy The Wicker Man. I'm not a fan of that film or its remake, but I'm glad people enjoy it for what it is. The others are great flicks however. Definitely five interesting choices.

  3. Super awesome list. Maybe I should fashion one as well...

  4. Liam: I couldn't leave out The Wicker Man, it's just so...strange and beautiful. And yes, you should check out Eraserhead. Lynch is a freak of nature.

Fred: Good of you to say so, and for the record- the Wicker Man remake makes me choke on my Cheerios. Gah!

Christine: Yes, yes, yes! You should do one as well, oh queen of cult ;o)

  5. Great list! Love to Last House on the Left and I Spit on Your Grave on there!

  6. Just my opinion- But part of the defination of being a cult classic is that the film has a loyal, but limited appeal to a certain audience. With that in mind, I think The Wicker Man and TCM have to broad of an appeal to be considered cult classics.

I do agree 100% on Eraserhead though. It's just been so long since I last saw it, that I didn't include it in mine. I need to watch that one again. It's been at least 10 years!

  7. Hello there - really enjoying your blog. Great stuff!

No Dawn Of The Dead? Suspiria? Exorcist?

I'm going to post my list over at my blog (cheeky plug) which covers similiar stuff over at:

    Cheers!

  8. @Brandon- It's spelled DEFINITION. Not to mention, that's not your definition, that's the one that is listed in the dictionary. When you really and truly define cult classic it's a film that is not generally accepted/mentioned in the mainstream audience. I will quote from my dear friend Brian Solomon and say that if you were to approach a person on the street and ask them what they think of TCM and you'll likely see this. You are so deep in the genre you forget this. And on a side note it's hilarious to hear this from the guy who created "Obscure Horror Month" which was the most subjective theme I have ever heard of in my life.

  10. Wonderful list, my dear! All great choices.

And if I could add my two cents to the controversy; For what it's worth, The Wicker Man is referred to as a cult film by everyone - from the "great" minds at Wikipedia, to the equally "great" minds at IMDB, and if that aint enough, I do believe that some guy named Roger Ebert (whoever he is), also calls it a cult film. As for Texas Chainsaw...when that movie came out people went nuts! They lined up around the block to see it ... it was like some sort of ...CULT!

    Have a nice day.

  11. I think it's important to remember that as much as we love movies like TCM and Wicker Man, and they might be very commonplace to us, to the general public they really are still marginal films. Thus, cult classics.

  12. Great list! The Wicker Man is one of my favorite films of all time. And the soundtrack is beyond gorgeous. I still get chills during "Willow's Song". IMO one of the sexiest scenes in film history, and the two actors are on opposite sides of a wall! Sheer brilliance.

  13. Morgan: Hey, thanks! It was so hard to actually pick only five.

Schtoffer: If I could have picked ten, I would have had Dawn of the Dead and possibly Suspiria, but I think The Exorcist was too mainstream to be considered cult. It was up for Oscars and everyone (horror fans or not) knew about it and saw it. Thanks so much for commenting!

Kristy: Thanks dear, you know how that grammar was killing me, among other things...
You always have my back, and I love you for it.

Pax and Brian: You guys are sweethearts for coming to my rescue and clarifying what I knew to be correct. Thanks!

*Most especially The Wicker Man is a cult film, and that is not just an opinion that is fact. And I totally agree, TX Chainsaw can only be considered cult. I tried your little experiment BSol - and no one I work with had even seen TCM. They'd heard of it, but certainly had absolutely NO inkling of what it was about besides the obviousness of the title. And no one had even heard of The Wicker Man, (or even its rancid remake). Most horror fans have heard of it, but not the general public, hence it developed a CULT following.

And Brandon: I stand by my choices, and I think you'll see I'm not alone.
Step back a bit, dude - you've still got things to learn.

  14. Miss Sardonicus: Yay! Some more Wicker Man love! I own the soundtrack as well - it's one of my favorites. An underappreciated and sometimes misunderstood film, a real gem.

  15. Pax & Brian speak many many truths!
Stand by that list, girl! It is really comprehensive and I love it.

  16. @Christine- I am so proud of you :) Hopefully Brandon will take a course in film history or something, I mean, he may be the EXPERT on modern horror, but he has a lot to learn about the beginning of film to 1999....

  19. Fantastic list! I like Fred [The Wolf] am not a big fan of The Wicker Man or it's remake, but then I have a hard time convincing people to watch Red Sonja with me, lol
