Something really sad about some of them too. I guess that's because they're old photos, and I always feel that old photos are tinged with sadness somehow.
I love these old photos. There is something about the combination of black and white photography and the primitive nature of the masks that gives them an atmosphere that can best be described as "Ozark magic leaking into the real world."
Kaijinu: Agreed, most of these are pretty darn creepy, but the eye is drawn to them nonetheless!
James: In some ways I think they are sad because they remind us of days gone by, and who doesn't want things to be the way they were long ago, at least some of the time...
Doug: I think the masks are just downright creepy - sometimes masks that are quite elaborate or detailed are nowhere near as unnerving as a simple mask, like most of these.
