Hey Christine. I just watched a movie called the woman in black(1989) and somehow chanced upon your review, which I agree with word to word.
Do you think that digital will never replicate the film look? Not just in horror but in all of cinema. I think the reason older films are better is because they have that "look". That feel, that vibe. High definition looks like video games. Every film today is glossy and shiny. I think I am the only one who notices this. My friends and others of this generation couldn't care less.
I think what makes the exorcist so great is the film look achieved by the 70s film stock. That documentarish vibe. It feels like the events are happening right next door to you. The woman in black has such a feel. An atmosphere as though you are actually transported there.
You bring up a very valid point. Though I'm not sure the films themselves are better, but certainly they LOOK creepier. Give me the grainy feel of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre over a digital, CGI'd to death new film any day. The Woman in Black ('89) is a fabulous film, and I don't know if you've seen the remake from a few years ago, but the elder film really does run rings around the redux - and they are from the same book. The feel and look of the older WIB just sends chills up my spine and I consider it in my top three favorites, all-time. The atmosphere is...exquisite - for lack of a better world.
Digital may try to replicate or even replace the film look, but it's blatantly obvious they won't be able to capture the atmosphere of all our favorite older films, like Jaws, The Exorcist, Friday the 13th, etc...
